Blueskin Café

Come and join us in our unique garden setting in the surroundings of Blueskin Nurseries.

Blueskin Nurseries is one of the most sustainable garden centre and cafe operations in New Zealand. We strive to lead the way running a self-sufficient garden centre and café. 

At Blueskin Nurseries Café, we pride ourselves in having delicious food, the best coffee in town and exceptional customer service.  Our goal is to grow, produce and sell food according to sustainable principles. We minimise our environmental footprint by creating awareness of our environmental impact among our staff, customers and suppliers and adopting sustainable practices throughout our business. It is a relaxed café with a large outdoor garden area opening into the surrounding garden centre.

We have a delicious menu that not only features gluten and dairy free options, but also a kids menu. Our emphasis is on fresh produce from local suppliers including near by Evansdale Cheese, Blueskin Bay Honey, Harbour Fish and also Mean Greens.

We are  serving locally roasted  Grid Coffee and our freshly baked slices, cakes and muffin. All of our food is baked and created onsite, including our preserves, relishes and jams. (Available for purchase)

The café is also very much a part of the Blueskin Bay Community with group visits, catering for local events and it is a gathering place at the weekends.

We also do catering and can tailor it to suit your needs. We bake and ice delicious birthday or wedding cakes. We can make anything to your requirements sandwiches to desserts, pots of soup to quiches, slices to salads, or even cheese boards and canapés for the office function or that special birthday celebration. We take group bookings.

We are committed to reducing fossil fuel usage and carbon emissions. In 2014 we made one of our biggest investments in renewable energy installing an array of 40 solar panels which generate solar power to run the café, garden centre & Road Side Attraction. It is proving to be very successful and on a summer’s day we are generating enough electricity to power about 60-70% of all activities.

 GROW OUR OWN

We love gardening and growing. We grow as much of our fresh produce as possible including tomatoes, courgettes, cucumbers, Florence fennel, broccoli, cauliflower, herbs, microgreens, edible flowers, lettuce, cabbage and lots more delicious treats.

Reduce

We have efficient stock management throughout the café. We buy in bulk to reduce packaging .By sourcing product from local suppliers we can work closely with them in meeting our needs and goals.

All of our takeaway packaging is recyclable or paper with a lower environmental footprint. Takeaway cups, napkins and straws are 100% recovered paper based product or made of renewable resources in New Zealand.

 Reuse

We can’t cook all the vegetable peelings, fruit stones and pips, roots and shoots but these are very valuable in our vegetable garden as a source of goodness for the next planting crop. Mark has an enormous compost heap to collect these goodies and composts them for returning to and enriching the soil.

 Recycle

We recycle and compost as much waste as possible and have the ambition of one day achieving zero-waste to landfill- helped by our staff, suppliers, and customers and lots more composting!

When we don’t bake product we source from local artisan suppliers who share our commitment to the environment, quality and sustainability. We pride ourselves on providing food which tastes the best. Our suppliers include:

We need your help in achieving our goals and encourage everyone to get involved.

We need to ask the hard questions: do we need a takeaway cup? Are you recycling our waste at home? 

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

Following the best sustainable practice is not enough for us at Blueskin Nurseries Café, so we are continually trying to improve as opportunities arise and best practices change. We are regularly upgrading equipment to reduce energy consumption, and look for opportunities to reduce our footprint.
